Catalina WE’s K-24, branch? rock? or just tired of sibling?

June 16, 2012 , , , , , , ,

I heard that K-24 had flown outside of the nest today, so went off in search of the video.  Here is a short video that I cut from the two hour U-stream record showing when he left the nest and then came back.   The full video is at  http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23362296  There is interesting behavior between K-27 and K-24 before K-24 flies over the side (which happens at about 28 min in to the full length video on ustream).  He flies back into the nest just before the end of the full video.  My short version below. Thank you to IWS and ustream!

Amazing. Unexpected behavior between eaglets.
First ever seeing them so not sure about 24 & 27 & is there no 25 or is third referred to as 26? One on rock seemed caring. Other lay down to nap…so nice the ousted one recovered. I’ll be keeping an eye on these 3 amigos. :)

Hi, was interesting behavior wasn’t it! Yes, you are right, they are K-24 and K-27. The little one wasn’t developed enough to get “wing bling”, so they gave her 2 leg bands and she is referred to as 5Z. I think it’s always amazing to see how “branching” occurs on a rock tower nest like West End. I’ve been told they sort of learn by working their way up and down the twigs that are on the sides of the rock.
