Are there really more nests with 3 eggs this year?

Many have mentioned that it seems like we have more nests with 3 eggs this year.  I did a quick calculation and yep, sure looks that way!   Not counting all the disclaimers I have to throw in and will mention below, this year so far, we have or had 3 eggs in 45% of the nests on cam, versus last year, where we had 25%.  A pretty big difference!  Now the disclaimers:  our cam nests are a very small percentage of all eagle nests in North America, so it may or may not represent the total eagle population; we haven’t finished with egg laying yet this year;  at some nests we don’t/didn’t know how many eggs were laid since we can’t see into the nests with the cams; and I’m comparing all of last year with this year to date.  Last year we had a total of 33 cam nests with eggs and so far this year we have 29, but as I noted, we are probably not done with egg laying yet…and probably the most important disclaimer…I’m writing this and calculating at 3am 😉

    1. Hi, sorry I didn’t reply earlier. It definitely seems that schedules are a bit different this year. I would only have the last couple of years of dates for the nests with cams. Judy B has a wonderful site with much more comprehensive info here: http://www.judyb-eagles.com/. Big congrats on the Hornby egg!
