Happily, Hatch #3 arrives at Lafarge. Sadly, Hatch #2 did not survive

Hancock Lafarge

So happy to learn that the third egg has hatched at the Hancock Lafarge nest!   Very sad to learn that our concerns for #2 were confirmed and that little one did not make it.  It is the first time that I have seen this type of failed hatch, and it is heartbreaking to know that the little one got so far in hatching and then something went wrong.  One can only trust nature I suppose.  But these old eyes do find it hard sometimes.   There is a video of Pa Lafarge removing the dead chick from the nest bowl and then the parents consuming (eating) the chick and feeding it to the oldest chick.  I have not watched, but am grateful to those that captured the information.  You can find more information and a link to the video on the Hancock Wildlife Forum.  Here is a link to about where the information starts in the forum posts

  1. Twizz, it is indeed sad to learn we lost E2. After what happened at the SWF nest this season, I can’t watch anymore sadness. As you said, it’s nature but still hard to watch. O & H feed little E3 to E4 too. At that site, we all preferred to think that E3 would live on thru E4 and give h/h added strength. That’s what I’ll think about this little one too.
