Sad loss of one egg tonight at the IWS Catalina West End nest

These are never easy to report and this one is particularly difficult.  Just a few days before expected hatch, one egg at the Catalina West End nest has been broken.  There was evidence of a fully formed chick inside the egg.  While no one knows what happened, in watching video, there are some who believe that perhaps first-time eagle mom K-91 accidentally stepped on the egg after being startled.  There is one remaining egg and we will all hope for a successful hatch.  Tonight Dad eagle Superman has night duty on the nest, which has not been unusual during incubation.

  1. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of you on your loss. We at the Hays Nest in Pittsburgh, PA lost both of ours. Some of us are taking it very hard as you must be. I do know that it takes times and good chatters to help you through it. Stay strong, You have one egg left.
